Student Renting in Loughborough - a guide

Living in Loughborough:

Loughborough University is located in the beautiful County of Leicestershire.  Being close to Nottingham and Leicester you get the benefit of their shops, bars, restaurants and other amenities whilst living slightly outside in a relatively small town.

Loughborough has an exceptional student union (which has been voted the best student union in the Country) which compensates for not having the nightlife on your doorstep that major cities offer.  The union runs different student nights throughout the week, however the most popular nights tend to be Tuesday, Wednesday (where you get to learn which sporting events Loughborough won that week) and Friday.  In town there are also a number of clubs and bars for students to enjoy.  The major draws tend to be Echoes, Wild and Varsity clubs in the City Centre.  You tend to find that whatever name the clubs have been given recently, the students always use the old names.

There are enough shops and markets in Loughborough to make for decent shopping, although Nottingham and Leicester may be worth a trip if you want some of the bigger stores/departments.  Unfortunately the amazing left legged pineapple closed which used to be great for music.  You have high street and independent stores in areas such as Carillon Shopping Centre and there are also a range of markets held on various days.

Places to rent

There is a great halls community in Loughborough, whichever one you end up in (let’s not get into that debate!).  There is sometimes the option of getting your final year in halls in addition to the first year if you so wich (and are lucky enough to get a place).  It may well be with friends made in halls that you end up renting a house privately in your 2nd/final year.

The most popular area is that around Leopold/Paget/Station Street.  This is largely taken over by student, and you have some decent pubs and the usual amenities you associate with student areas.  It has easy access to university, town and supermarkets.  The quality of accommodation can be variable.

There can be some decent finds elsewhere though, so don’t discount other areas.  Some student accommodation can be found the other side of Ashby Road (around Fredrick Street).  The area the opposite side of the university from town (around Hermitage Road) sometimes gets talked down and has the disadvantage of being a longer distance from town, however if you get a decent house at a reasonable price, it may be right for you!

Where ever you choose, have a great time – university days are often referred to as the best of your life.
