A guide to student renting in Liverpool

Where are the popular locations for student accommodation?

We’ve been recommended the following:

  • Smithdown: Smithdown Road is the official border line between the Liverpool districts of Wavertree and Toxteth.  These areas have grown over the past few years, especially since 2008 when Liverpool won the European Capital of Culture award.  The road is also well known for "The Smithdown Ten" pub crawl
  • Dingle: cheap and close to town.  Filming for the BBC series ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’ and also ‘Bread’, was often in Dingle's Garswood Street and Elswick Street respectively
  • Childwall is a good option for students who have a slightly higher housing budget
  • Allerton is one of the most popular student areas in Liverpool. With its 10 minute bus ride to Hope Universitys Campus and its 15 Minute Bus ride to town it has useful transport links.  It also  has a number of pubs and bars, an Odeon cinema, and a 24/7 supermarket.

How does this compare to your experience?

What is the average rent?

Student rent averages around £75 per week per room, although this will obviously fluctuate depending on condition of the property, location, what bills are included, and the sometimes the size of the property.

What are the transport links like?

Transport for students around the City and to the University is affordable and due to campus being a very short distance from the city centre most students can easily walk to University.

Bus: There is a bus service which runs approximately every ten minutes from the campus to student areas.  There are great student travel passes deals that are worth a look.

Trains: The University is located closely to Liverpool Lime Street train station but there is a range of stations located across the City.

Airports: John Lennon Airport is located about 20 minutes from the city centre.  Manchester Airport is only 45 minutes travel time from the centre of Liverpool.

Are there parking and permit considerations?

If you are lucky enough to have a car, when deciding where to rent remember that parking zones are in force across many areas of the city.  Resident parking permits are easy enough to apply for if required.  You will need to find out the parking zone you require the permit for.

What is it like living in Liverpool?

Liverpool famously has a great nightlife.  There is a real variety of music and night club venues, not to mention the comedy clubs, restaurants, museums and bars.  There will be something to meet all tastes.  Many of the museums, cinemas, restaurants and bars/clubs also do student discount and special student days/nights, so remember to look out for these.

Liverpool has an excellent selection of shopping – including the Liverpool One complex, Cavern Walks and The Metquarter.  Many of the big named shops in Liverpool City Centre offer student discount ranging, so remember to check this out before buying.
